Travertine is a sedimentary natural stone formed when there is a rapid precipitation of calcite by the evaporation of rivers and spring water. Calcite, also called calcium carbonate (CaCO3), mixes with other minerals, thus making such patterns and colours.

Travertine is fairly translucent, and it comes in tan, ivory, white, yellow, gold, red, beige, and brown.
